Biggest Bedtime Story Ever comes to Millvale Riverfront Park
To celebrate the opening of the Millvale Public Library the community is hosting the Biggest Bedtime Story Ever at Millvale Riverfront Park on Friday, July 18 from 5:30 – 7:00 pm. With support from READ! 365, a campaign of Beginning with Books®, the event is free to the public and will feature bedtime stories, music, a light dinner, a PJ parade (as kids are encourages to wear their favorite pajamas) and visits from local celebrities. Also, each child will receive a gift book packet from Beginning with Books.
After more than a year of organizing, activism and fund-raising, the Millvale Public library opened on June 2 in the Millvale Community Center. With support from the Grable Foundation, Courtney Anderson, a recent graduate from Pitt’s School of Information Science is welcoming children and their families Tuesday through Saturday. Conceived by Tricia George and Brian Wolovich it was their idea to fill one of the borough's empty buildings with a full-size library. The closest existing libraries are at least three miles away in Shaler, Sharpsburg or Lawrenceville.
Aside from the local Boys and Girls Club, Wolovich says, "there's not a lot for children to do around here. ... The kids deserve an opportunity to be in a literacy-dense environment."
Most recently the library has acquired a space at 213 Grant Avenue and with the help of North Hills Community Outreach has begun renovation. The facility is due to open in the fall.
“We’re planning a fun-filled event that families can enjoy together – just like the experience of reading,” says Laurie Moser, READ! 365 Director. We all need to do our part. Kids are our future, so it is important that, together, we make sure every child has the best start in life.”
About READ! 365
READ! 365 is campaign of the non-profit Beginning with Books Center for Early Literacy to raise awareness and engage the community around the issue of early literacy in the Greater Pittsburgh region. The message is simple: read every day to the children in your world, starting at birth. Every time you read with a child, you read for a child, helping him or her gain the skills and enthusiasm to become a successful reader and life-long learner. Our goal is to inspire children to read, adults to guide and communities to grow together.
