Established in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina, and local flooding resulting from Hurricane Ivan; New Sun Rising supports grass roots projects in the Pittsburgh region through fiscal sponsorship and mentoring. We seek to help ideas become reality: by 'connecting the dots' of community support, providing 501c3 status and subscription grant database access, issuing discounted and free software through Tech Soup, and plugging projects into the logistical network of our community partners and volunteers. New Sun Rising’s vision is to become the grass-roots option for creative solutions in the community by providing fiscal sponsorship to adopted projects. Through identifying and promoting ideas aligned with our values, we emphasize: ease of process, efficient use of resources, and effectiveness of support.

Mission: New Sun Rising exists as a non-profit organization that launches projects to positively impact cultural, environmental, and social wellness. Our organization creates measurable change through projects primarily affecting the region of Western PA through direct action, education, social service, goods, and training.

Paper News: I Am the Printing Press

Fresh off artist Sam Perry's "Welcome to SamSamland", comes "Paper News: I Am the Printing Press", an interactive, cocreative, and ecologically sentient art project exploring the issue of media consumption and shifting cultures. It includes a monthly zine, a live improv news variety show, a qr code experiment, discussion groups, musical performances, community events, and a 3 week long art exhibit opening July of 2012 at Assemble.

Words cannot express the depth of our gratitude toward everyone who made this October's production of Evenings in Quarantine: The Zombie Opera spectacular. It was truly amazing getting to work with some very talented people and hearing feedback from our audience. Your enthusiasm made this project successful, and your dedication made it sensational. Whatever the future may hold for the Zombie Opera, this will always be the first group of people to have participated in our "Love letter to Pittsburgh."

New Sun Rising Sponsors Redd Up Thread Up

We're pleased to announce that we recently welcomed Redd Up Thread Up as a project under New Sun Rising's fiscal sponsorship!

Redd Up Thread Up is a non-incorporated bi-annual event, which is held in different locations throughout Pittsburgh with a different benefiting organization each time the event is held. 100% of the proceeds of Redd Up Thread Up is donated to the benefiting organization. Funds are collected when participants sift through the collection of donated goods and “shop” using a Redd Up Thread Up tote bag which can be purchased for $5-$10, depending on prior donation.
