Fiscal sponsorship provides access to restricted funding, grants, tax-deductible donations, and other valuable project management benefits
For small, early stage, or innovative nonprofits with limited capacity, fiscal sponsorship allows leaders to focus on project design and implementation while we take care of compliance. The ability to test new projects in a supportive, trusting relationship is an important aspect of any social innovation ecosystem. New Sun Rising seeks to reduce friction between the work required to manage your funds and implement your idea.
In addition to the traditional fiscal sponsorship benefits of 501(c)(3) status, New Sun Rising offers capacity building, mentoring, grant application support, strategic networking, consideration of funding options, and advocacy for your project.
As a member in our fiscal sponsorship program, you will…
- Become a project of New Sun Rising’s 501(c)(3) status with the ability to accept grants and donations
- Receive grant application support, donation and grant processing, and tax document compliance
- Attend advising sessions with staff through open office hours
- Utilize our Budget Management System technology for ease of fund requests, distribution, and tracking
- Access to payroll services, liability insurance, consulting, bridge loans, and more (additional fees may apply)
New Sun Rising is committed to supporting projects that align with our fiscal sponsorship model and risk guidelines. If your project includes medical- or health-related activities—such as mental health support, suicide prevention, crisis intervention, or other direct support services—we carefully review these activities to ensure they fall within an appropriate risk level for our program.
Risk Considerations: Projects focused on general information sharing and public awareness typically present the lowest level of risk and are often a good fit. Education and training initiatives may involve moderate risk and are reviewed thoughtfully on a case-by-case basis. Projects that provide direct services, treatment, clinical care, crisis response, or therapeutic interventions (including suicide prevention services delivered directly to individuals) carry a higher level of risk and are not currently eligible for fiscal sponsorship with New Sun Rising.
We recognize that this work is important and impactful, and we want to be as transparent as possible to support alignment from the outset. If you have questions about how your project activities fit within these guidelines, we encourage you to reach out to our team at info@newsunrising.org before applying. We’re happy to help you think through next steps.
The Fiscal Sponsorship Committee will use the Vibrancy Rubric below to evaluate and score your application materials.
