Mike will present legal and moral arguments against the use of forced treatment and discuss alternatives. Learn more at www.insideourminds.org/radical-mental-health. \nAbout the Presenter \nMike McCarthy worked in the mental health system for 7 years\, but became disillusioned with a system that uses threats\, coercion\, and involuntary treatment to try to help people. SUMMARY:We Are All Related exhibition
DESCRIPTION:We Are All Related\, a multimedia exhibit of photographic portraits\, audiovisual recordings\, and written narratives by acclaimed Pittsburgh photographer Andrea London\, opens March 22 at 937 Gallery\, downtown Pittsburgh. We Are All Related is a collection of compelling images and stories of the human experience and human and civil rights struggles of individuals and families living in the region. \nWe Are All Related features images and the personal narratives of immigrants and refugees\, members of the LGBTQ community\, people with differing abilities\, and others facing discrimination and marginalization. Select subjects include a woman blind since birth whose parents had to fight for her to attend a public grade school\, a Bhutanese family who survived 20-years in a Nepali refugee camp; a 24-year-old transgender man\, and a family whose patriarch was recently deported. \nA concurrent public art installation by Andrea London\, designed to expand the visibility of We Are All Related\, is also opening on March 22 at the corner of Penn and Centre Avenues in East Liberty. This high-traffic intersection will carry a conversation of cultural inclusion and prospective sharing through the streets of Pittsburgh. In a call for understanding and urgency\, this installation includes large-scale vinyl printed portraits of diverse residents and the words “We Are All Related” translated in the 17 languages represented by the portrait subjects. \nThe We Are All Related exhibition at 937 Gallery\, 937 Liberty Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh\, and the public art installation on the corner of Penn and Centre Avenues in East Liberty\, both run from March 22 through May 12. The public art installation is hosting a neighborhood kickoff party Sunday\, March 24 from 2-4 p.m. A book of the portraits and narratives\, also titled We Are All Related\, will be available at 937 Gallery\, in book stores throughout Pittsburgh\, and online. SUMMARY:Mental Health Cafe - April Edition
DESCRIPTION:For April’s Mental Health Cafe\, join the Inside Our Minds Team as we meet-up and discuss mental health and mental illness in a casual\, peer-led setting. 🙂\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will be meeting in room 3b. If you cannot find the group\, please private message our Facebook page or text the Inside Our Minds phone line: (412) 438-3278.\n\n\n\n\n\nCarnegie Library – East Liberty is wheelchair and mobility device accessible. The Inside Our Minds staff will have earplugs on hand for anyone who would like them. We also utilize a colored name tag system to display social interaction preferences (originally from the Autistic community).\n\n\n\n\n\n***\n\n\n\n\n\nMental Health Cafe is a monthly community conversation on mental health and mental illness over coffee (or tea!) and treats. The event will focus on informal discussions and friendly peer support in a welcoming space for all. People are invited to participate actively or passively\, or just listen.\n\n\n\n\n\nInside Our Minds builds collective community narratives on mental health and mental illness in Pittsburgh. Inside Our Minds is a project of New Sun Rising.\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Mental Health Cafe is not a substitute for professional mental health treatment. We are also not a support group. We can only provide friendly peer support and conversation. 🙂

SUMMARY:Inclusive Decision Making for Business and Community
DESCRIPTION:For all the good they can do\, many businesses\, agencies\, and community organizations can also be less than inclusive in their decision making. Increasingly\, businesses and community organizations see being more inclusive as a way to create more value in what they do. It’s of course about doing the right thing but also about “firing on all cylinders” and having a diverse set of skills and perspectives in the house. \nYou should walk out of this event with new acquaintances and colleagues and allies in our quest to make Pittsburgh’s business and community development scene more inclusive\, efficient\, and vibrant. \nJoin members of the Pittsburgh Chamber of Cooperatives to hear their stories of how they make their decision making more inclusive and productive. \nThis\, like all Inclusive Innovation Week events\, is free.
