SUMMARY:Cultural Gumbo: music\, food\, & art fundraiser for fire recovery
DESCRIPTION:Born out of an event supporting New Orleans’ musicians after Hurricane Katrina and Pittsburgh communities after Hurricane Ivan\, the Cultural Gumbo helps creatives and grassroots projects thrive while raising funds for our shared community space: the Food + Energy Hub in Millvale. \nUnfortunately in the lead up to this event\, disaster struck on January 30\, 2023 as our building experienced a significant electrical fire in the basement. The damage is extensive and the building’s mission-based tenants will be displaced for some time as clean up occurs. Fortunately our community is strong and we plan to rebuild as quickly and safely as possible. \nThe good news is that our friends and neighbors at Mr Smalls have welcomed us to make sure that the show goes on! New Sun Rising and Sprezzatura are pleased to present the Cultural Gumbo hosted by Day Bracey\, including New Orleans inspired food from Sprezzatura\, live music from Brassholio and Red Beans & Rice Combo\, and some of Pittsburgh’s best visual artists including Marlon Gist\, JY Originals\, Baron Batch\, and screen printing with Quaishawn Whitlock. New Sun Rising is also excited to celebrate our 2023 Vibrancy Awardees for culture: #notwhitecollective and Unshakeable Motherhood. Support local culture and help us raise funds to rebuild the Hub as an even better place to create\, connect\, and celebrate together. \nAdvance tickets are now available for a discount. $30 at the door. Food\, drinks\, and art will be available for purchase during the event. All proceeds will support fire recovery efforts and affected tenants at the Millvale Food + Energy Hub. \nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:Power in Numbers 2.0: Data + Creative Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Join NSR and partners for a virtual Power in Numbers 2.0 launch event. We will be sharing the redesigned Vibrancy Portal tech platform\, launching the new Creative Advocacy Playbook\, and exploring the practical uses of data and advocacy together.\n\nIn 2019\, NSR launched a data + advocacy initiative called Power in Numbers. Building upon our experience supporting grassroots community initiatives\, we recognize that a lack of data + advocacy capacity limits their ability to grow and collectively transform systems.\n\nPower in Numbers is first and foremost about helping under-resourced organizations and communities to secure the financial\, social\, intellectual\, and creative capital necessary to reach their goals. We developed the Vibrancy Portal tech platform and Creative Advocacy initiative to amplify those efforts.

SUMMARY:Power in Numbers: learning to build your impact through data + collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Join New Sun Rising to learn more about the Power in Numbers initiative. \nNew Sun Rising believes that all organizations and communities should have access to the information and technology necessary to reach their goals. \nWe know that Nonprofit and Social Enterprise leaders who regularly use data have better outcomes. Unfortunately\, most do not have the time\, experience\, or resources to do so. The Power in Numbers initiative was launched to help leaders strengthen the data culture within their organization in order to create even greater impact. Participants receive training and support to unlock the power of information\, collaboration\, reporting\, and storytelling through a central technology data management system: the Vibrancy Portal. \nBy helping organizations to collect\, understand\, and communicate information about their impact\, Power in Numbers builds stronger relationships with stakeholders which can influence change. Leaders benefit from access to technology and technical assistance designed to help them: \n\nCollect and manage their data\nGenerate deeper insights across multiple data sets to improve effectiveness\nProduce data driven reports and storytelling\nPromote collective impact and advocacy around the Sustainable Development Goals\n\nRegister for this free informational session to learn more about how data and collaboration can increase your impact.

SUMMARY:Cooperatives Meetup and Networking
DESCRIPTION:Most people want a better way to work\, and they like the cooperative business model\, but they aren’t confident enough yet about co-ops to take the plunge. Many people start cooperative businesses as a sideline\, so it’s not a big risk. \nMany people may have the same ideas of cooperatives they want to start\, but need additional people to build their businesses and co-ops. \nSo\, let’s have some face-to-face events\, some with facilitated discussions and/or presentations so potential co-op members can be informed about new accomplishments and trends in the co-op space\, and meet each other and people making waves in the pool. \nThe “pieces of the puzzle” are here; we just need to connect people and resources who represent them. \nMost importantly\, let’s build a pipeline of co-op businesses to form and cultivate a network of knowledgeable\, helpful cooperators. You are not alone! Join us July 30!

SUMMARY:A Letter Compiled From All Letters
DESCRIPTION:As tools for communication shift from pencil and paper to keyboard and screen and definitions for what is actual and virtual continue to blur\, the creators for A Letter Compiled From All Letters consider connection and communication in a digital age. In this evening-length\, contemporary dance work that merges live performance and video projection – wood\, paper\, pencil\, devices\, objects\, text\, movement\, and sound all start to collapse and meld and affect each other as human bodies try to resist\, succumb\, absorb\, utilize\, control\, and react to them all. \nThis project began with letter-writing. Collaborators Maree ReMalia (director/choreographer)\, Gigi Gatewood (multimedia artist)\, and Lillian Cho (performer) asked friends and acquaintances to write them letters sharing moments of significance and the impacts of digital communication in their lives. Aspects of the letters influenced early explorations in the creative process. Since these early stages\, the work has evolved in unexpected ways. \nThe collaborative team works with cross-disciplinary cast members David Bernabo\, Joseph Hall\, Moriah Ella Mason\, Jil Stifel\, and understudy Sarah Friedlander. The artists feel into the physicality\, pace\, and content of analog letter writing alongside the fleeting communication that exists in virtual spaces. Live and recorded sound indicate spaciousness and fullness of time. The performers activate a mobile\, wooden set designed by visual artist\, Natalia Gomez and are costumed by designer\, Emily Vallozzi. \nThis project is presented in partnership with New Hazlett Theater through a new pilot program aimed at helping artists who are shifting from emerging to established status. Funding for the A Letter Compiled From All Letters was provided by the A.W. Mellon Grant and Investing in Professional Artists Creative Development Grant of The Pittsburgh Foundation\, Opportunity Fund\, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (a state agency)\, The Heinz Endowments Small Arts Initiative\, Amherst College Guest Artist Series\, Kelly Strayhorn Theater Fresh Works Residency\, PearlArts Studios PearlDiving Movement Residency and New Sun Rising donor\, Courtney Harris. \nFor ticket inquiries please contact Anne Morgano at anne@newhazletttheater.org or by phone at 412-320-4610 ext 17. \nFor more information on accessible seating or assistive listening devices please contact Courtney at 412-320-4610 ext. 16 or courtney@newhazletttheater.org
