SUMMARY:We Are All Related exhibition
DESCRIPTION:We Are All Related\, a multimedia exhibit of photographic portraits\, audiovisual recordings\, and written narratives by acclaimed Pittsburgh photographer Andrea London\, opens March 22 at 937 Gallery\, downtown Pittsburgh. We Are All Related is a collection of compelling images and stories of the human experience and human and civil rights struggles of individuals and families living in the region. \nWe Are All Related features images and the personal narratives of immigrants and refugees\, members of the LGBTQ community\, people with differing abilities\, and others facing discrimination and marginalization. Select subjects include a woman blind since birth whose parents had to fight for her to attend a public grade school\, a Bhutanese family who survived 20-years in a Nepali refugee camp; a 24-year-old transgender man\, and a family whose patriarch was recently deported. \nA concurrent public art installation by Andrea London\, designed to expand the visibility of We Are All Related\, is also opening on March 22 at the corner of Penn and Centre Avenues in East Liberty. This high-traffic intersection will carry a conversation of cultural inclusion and prospective sharing through the streets of Pittsburgh. In a call for understanding and urgency\, this installation includes large-scale vinyl printed portraits of diverse residents and the words “We Are All Related” translated in the 17 languages represented by the portrait subjects. \nThe We Are All Related exhibition at 937 Gallery\, 937 Liberty Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh\, and the public art installation on the corner of Penn and Centre Avenues in East Liberty\, both run from March 22 through May 12. The public art installation is hosting a neighborhood kickoff party Sunday\, March 24 from 2-4 p.m. A book of the portraits and narratives\, also titled We Are All Related\, will be available at 937 Gallery\, in book stores throughout Pittsburgh\, and online. To learn more\, visit www.andrealondon.com.

SUMMARY:Teaching Artist Award Grant Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Transformative Teaching Artist Awards\n\n\nIntroduction \nThe New Sun Rising with support from The Heinz Endowments is pleased to announce this Request for Proposals as part of the Transformative Arts Process (TAP)\, a Heinz Endowments’ grants program focused on fostering the careers of teaching artists and bringing transformative arts experiences to youth.  TAP’s specific goal is to move towards a more Just Pittsburgh by invigorating the field of teaching artists and arts organizations that have a demonstrated practice of challenging structural inequities\, bringing transformative arts centered experience to youth in and from African American/ distressed communities.  \nTransformative Teaching Artist Award Program Description \nThe Transformative Teaching Artist Awards recognize that quality teaching artists should be recognized for the important work they do in Pittsburgh’s African American and “distressed” communities. Teaching artists play critical roles in the lives of the youth they serve\, providing not only artistic skill building\, but caring\, support and mentorship.  Yet those teaching artists who have chosen this as their life’s work face great challenges in building teaching artist careers. Most of our teaching artists are underpaid and under recognized; the delivery system for teaching artist instruction is fragmented; and arts instruction is often not assigned a high priority in public or out of school time programs. \nThe Transformative Teaching Artist Awards have been created to add another validation\, strengthened networking and increased visibility for the artists who choose to do this work amazingly well.  It is our hope that these recognition awards can play a part in acknowledging teaching artistry designed to play a transformative role in the lives of youth living in African American\, Black\, and “distressed” neighborhoods\, as an important and recognized profession.  The Transformative Teaching Artist Awards program will provide ten teaching artists in the field with a cash award of $5\,000. The awards are recognition awards which may be used in any way the recipient deems fit. \nProgram Goals \n\nRecipients have an increased sense of being appreciated and confidence in their work as a teaching artist.\nRecipients will join the TAP network and build relationships with colleagues they did not know and strengthen their own practice in the process.\nLocal media will feature the work of recipients and highlight the importance of teaching art & culture in African American and “distressed” neighborhoods.\n\n\nDeadline August 19th at 11:59pm \nMore information below \nTransformative Teaching Artist Awards
