Communities that are not safe and welcoming for all cannot be vibrant.
New Sun Rising (NSR) stands in solidarity with our community, recognizing that our strength and vibrancy are rooted in our diversity and inclusivity. We acknowledge the pain and injustice that have shaped our society, including the ongoing impact of our nation’s history built on free labor and that our work takes place on stolen land originally settled 19,000 years ago by the Shawnee, Lenape, and Seneca people. Systemic oppression continues to show up in many ways, as evidenced by disparities in health, environmental, and economic outcomes for racial, ethnic, and LGBTQIA+ groups. In order to develop communities that benefit all, we must reject racism and discrimination in all of its forms.
NSR is deeply rooted in our community, acknowledges its struggles, and shares in its aspirations. We recognize the responsibility to leverage our organizational position to affect meaningful change. Our core values ground our efforts through inclusive & equitable, asset-based, and adaptive practices. We understand that our access to resources has been aided by systems and institutions that oppress, discriminate, and extract wealth. We are committed to redirecting these resources and our efforts towards:
- Working towards the collective healing and well-being of all people.
- Sharing access to resources and facilitating self-sufficiency with those who have been historically discriminated against.
- Organizing, supporting, and amplifying equitable community development initiatives.
- Listening to the experiences of – and learning from – the wisdom of those we serve, centering them as the drivers and beneficiaries of change.
- Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion practices with supported projects and partners.
- Taking a data-informed approach to funding and programming that includes self-identified race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality.
- Staying accountable to inclusive process and equitable access by sharing the identity demographics of those we support on an annual basis.
NSR recognizes that public statements on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are far easier to make than longstanding and tangible change. We commit to take these concrete and public actions that push back against racism and discrimination in all forms, while inviting feedback and sharing information to hold us accountable. We align with funders and partners who do the same.
NSR asks that you join us in directing financial support, social capital, knowledge, and skills to lift up the work of socially and economically disadvantaged communities in pursuit of a just society for all.
