A Letter Compiled From All Letters
Choreographer Maree ReMalia (PA) collaborates with multi-media artist Gigi Gatewood (NY) and performer Lillian Cho (DC) to create A Letter Compiled From All Letters (ALCFAL), an evening-length dance work that includes disciplinary mash-ups merging live performance with video works that showcase nuanced gestures and over the top physicalities, song, sound, set, and text. They work with Pittsburgh-based artists David Bernabo, Natalia Gomez, Susan Kuo, Moriah Ella Mason, and Jil Stifel to seek creative antidotes to communication that does not always support connection by inviting individuals from diverse identifications to write them letters early in the process that share significant moments from their lives. The artists explore how this correspondence cultivates a sense of intimacy with others and the ways this type of interaction influences the choreographed work. Aspects of the letters also influenced the development of improvisational scores designed to generate movement and experiments with video, music, sound, and text. These early experiments were developed into choreographic material, video content, music tracks, live sound, text, and sketches for set design for the work. The live performance is abstract and nonlinear and contains elements of traditional virtuosity, pedestrian moments, humor, and tenderness.
ALCFAL premieres at New Hazlett Theater June 14-15, 2019. Stay tuned for information about workshops, open rehearsals, and a work-in-progress showing that are open to the community.
