Strategy: Connectivity

Three Rivers Screenwriters Conference

The 3 Rivers Screenwriters Conference is a 3-day educational event that provides a unique opportunity for aspiring film and television writers, filmmakers, students and film buffs to participate in seminars, panel and round-table discussions with top film and television writers, directors, independent and documentary filmmakers, producers and award-winning screenwriting educators.

Attendees will learn various aspects of writing for the screen and stage, and story development while listening to the stories and experiences of the panelists. It’s a small, intimate conference that provides a supportive community as well as incredible networking opportunities.

The 3 Rivers Screenwriters Conference is currently a self-funded and developed project by Founder & Director, Cathy Rescher of Mob Communications, LLC. We’re please to have New Sun Rising acting as the project’s fiscal sponsor. Other sponsors currently include Final Draft, Stage 32, Screencraft, Point Park University, The Beauty Shoppe, Small Change, Imagebox, Row House Cinema and Visit Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh in the Round

Founded by Mara Nadolski in 2013, Pittsburgh in the Round is “a directory of every single venue & company and a calendar of every theater, dance & opera event happening.”

But it’s not just lists & links. Latest PITR blog posts include thorough coverage of this year’s Pittsburgh Fringe Festival, play reviews (The Flick at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, Laws of Attraction by Attack Theatre), and a multi-part mini-series “on why Pittsburgh artists lose their heads over Shakespeare’s works.”

Nadolski had covered the Fringe in previous years & already knew Dan Stiker, NSR’s Director of Fiscal Sponsorship & ArtsMODE. ArtsMODE presented an opportunity to learn how to make PITR sustainable. “I definitely didn’t know how to do it myself,” she says. “I’ve learned a ton about how a business or nonprofit runs. This is by far the most beneficial thing I’ve gotten myself into!”

With its extensive directories, all-inclusive event calendar, and articles & reviews on current local theater events, Pittsburgh in the Round is already… well-rounded. Next steps include fiscal sponsorship and expanding the site to include advertising.

“In the long run I’d love to be an artistic director of a small experimental theater company,” Nadolski says. “But before [that I’ll] try and bring together the city’s theater community through Pittsburgh in the Round.”

EdTechPgh

EdTechPGH is a meetup group that connects people working at the intersection of education and technology. We invite educators, developers, researchers, students, and anyone passionate about education to join us.

Storypearls

Storypearls LLC combines the power of custom-tailored author programs & residencies with the power of personalized autographed books, primarily for children from low socio-economic backgrounds. Storypearls brings to life the power of these words: imagination, culture, and kindness.

Imagination: Author Sydelle Pearl demystifies the author process by describing details of her process from inspiration to publication in order to empower students to write & tell their own stories.

Culture: The author demonstrates how other books thematically connect to her highlighted book in order to make relevant connections between books to foster a love of reading & to expose children to the larger world.

Kindness: At the culmination of the author visit or residency, every class and/or every student receives a gift of a personalized autographed copy of the book that sparked Sydelle Pearl’s author journey with them in order to inspire them to read.

Inside Our Minds

Inside Our Minds is a peer-controlled, radical mental health organization that works to elevate the voices of people with lived experience of mental illness, madness, and other conceptualizations of mental health. Inside Our Minds serves the Pittsburgh region through free, community-based radical mental health programming:

The Radical Mental Health Series, recurring educational workshops that focus on a social justice perspective of mental illness. Radical mental health supports more inclusive and diverse perspectives of mental health, prioritizing the voices of local activists and advocates with lived experience as educators and experts. The Radical Mental Health Series works to educate the public and provide a space for the open discussion of radical mental health topics to promote shared understanding and anti-oppressive practices in mental health. This series is made possible through funding from the Opportunity Fund.

Anonymous Open Mic, an expressive storytelling project working to build a community narrative around mental health in Pittsburgh. Community members are invited to submit a poem, spoken word piece, or short story about mental health, mental illness, madness, substance use / addiction, trauma, or a similar experience to perform at the event. Community members also have the option to submit their piece anonymously and have a volunteer perform the piece live on their behalf. This series is made possible through funding from the Sprout Fund and Staunton Farm Foundation.

Mental Health Cafe, a monthly community conversation on mental health, mental illness, and madness over coffee and treats. Mental Health Cafe focuses on informal discussions and friendly mutual aid in a welcoming space for all.

The Radical Mental Health Reading Group, a monthly informal discussion on different texts in radical mental health, for people of all educational and professional backgrounds (no experience in academia, professional mental health settings, or similar positions is required).

Contextual Camouflage

McKoy Creative is one of 9 organizations chosen for CTSI’s WORDOUT: Community Research Dissemination Challenge. The WORDOUT challenge is an opportunity for community focused organizations to creatively disseminate research from multiple scientific disciplines. Given that the average time it takes for research to reach the communities they would most benefit is 17 years, researchers need all the help they can get to get the word out in a way that is informative, relevant & easy to understand.

For our part, McKoy Creative (with support from New Sun Rising) is constructing an interactive art installation that disseminates information and combats the stigma surrounding mental & behavioral health. Contextual Camouflage aims to transform research into a living narrative using a web based application, GIS technology, and user input to paint a picture of the prevalence of mental disorders in the community. The project will show that anyone, anywhere around you could be living with a mental disorder and you wouldn’t even know it, whilst also showing those that live with mental disorders that they are not alone. We will also provide educational, outreach, preventative resources for the community.

Hello Neighbor

Hello Neighbor is an organization dedicated to supporting & empowering refugees & immigrants. Our mission is to break down barriers by building bridges. We do this through a variety of educational resources, community events & dedicated programming focusing on refugees & immigrants who have been in the U.S. from between 6 months through 5 years.
We also believe in educating & providing resources to mentors so they can become Refugee Advocates. We believe that by being a conduit to relationships through mentorship & community building, we can help remove stigma & prejudice around refugees & immigrants.

Braddock Tiles

Braddock Tiles is a socially engaged business that produces durable handmade ceramic architectural tiles and fine art tiles. Situated in the neighborhood of Braddock PA and within the larger context of post-industrial unemployment, we are committed to creating job opportunities for our neighbors and providing work readiness programming for young adults.

We have in invaluable partnership with the Braddock Youth Project, a very successful youth employment and empowerment program serving the local community since 2006. Braddock Tiles served as a work site for youth over the summer of 2016 and through the 2016-17 school year, with an anticipated group of six youth for the 2017 summer. Local youth discover the ceramic medium by learning the art of tile making and have opportunities to explore other tools and techniques in the shop. Over the months, youth develop “soft” job skills and learn to make high quality, hand-crafted architectural tiles.
