Program: Grow

All of Us Care

NSR consulted with All of Us Care, a program of Volunteers of America serving the youth in Sharpsburg, to develop a plan for sustainable growth. The project included internal organizational analysis and community engagement research to inform a Sustainability + Action Plan. Another deliverable was a marketing video which captured the amazing spirit and impact of the All of Us Care program.

South Hilltop Men’s Group

The South Hilltop Men’s Group is a organization on a mission to reclaim our streets, restore our community pride and repair the damage that was done by years of disinvestment and neglect. We seek to provide healthy alternatives to the destructive behaviors that harm the community. Our approach to healing the neighborhoods is through educational, spiritual, and economic empowerment. We provide programming that encourages responsible entrepreneurism, workforce development, and case management support with a focus on building community. The South Hilltop Men’s Group provides opportunities for training, certification, field experience, and living wage employment through community partners such as Construction Junction and Hilltop Rising. They are the lead developer in the Beltzhoover Institute for Arts & Sciences renovation project.

Prototype Makerspace

Archived Project. To make a donation, please visit https://prototypepgh.com

What started as a personal studio for co-founders Erin Oldynski and E.Louise Larson is now a feminist makerspace. Prototype was born from the idea that we are constantly prototyping the kind of world we want to live in. As two women who love making, educating, and Pittsburgh, this is our first prototype for the future. We see Prototype as a space where feminists of all genders are welcome to make things, fail quickly, and find the support to start all over again. Prototype is a recipient of the 100 Days of US grant through the Sprout Fund.

Triboro Ecodistrict

The Triboro Ecodistrict promotes coordinated sustainable community development throughout the Boroughs of Millvale, Etna and Sharpsburg. With over 10,000 residents combined, these Allegheny River Towns are building on a strong collaborative history to promote sustainable community development through the shared lenses of: Equity, Food, Water, Energy, Air Quality, and Mobility.

This partnership between New Sun Rising, Etna Economic Development Corporation, and Sharpsburg Neighborhood Organization has received guidance from Triboro ally evolveEA, which supports this initiative with planning and project management services.

Since its self-effacing beginning in 2012 with the creation of Millvale’s Ecodistrict Pivot Plan, the Triboro Ecodistrict has secured considerable funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Henry L Hillman Foundation, and The Heinz Endowments. Backing from these organizations has allowed projects like the Sharpsburg Sustainability & Civic Engagement Center, Etna Riverfront Park and the state of the art DC Microgrid at Millvale Food + Energy Hub to come to fruition. The development of ecodistricts within communities is key to address climate change and the effects that come with it. If you would like to get involved or learn more about applying the ecodistrict strategies in your area, contact brian@triboroecodistrict.org.
