Strategy: Sustainability

Folia Water

The goal of Folia Water is to provide clean water for some of the 660 million people around the world without access to clean drinking water, with a goal of 100 million people using pAge papers each day at a price point of a penny per day.

Access to clean water is a basic human right. Lack thereof has deprived millions of their dignity, their well-being, and their very lives. In many regions, water is abundant but contaminated by pathogens that cause debilitating and deadly diseases.

The pAge filter is cheap, lightweight for portability, requires no energy or external inputs, and is made of only green reagents and renewable paper. Because the pAge filters are simply paper, educational information is printed on them to educate users about water, sanitation, and hygiene. The papers release silver at concentrations below EPA/WHO guidelines and are thus safe and long lasting: a paper containing mg’s of silver should be able to filter about 100 L of water, several weeks of water for one person. A backpack of filter papers should be able to clean water for a village of 500 people for 1 year, while a pallet can provide clean water for 10,000 people for one year.

Folia Water aspires to create a point-of-use filter paper system at a price point – 10 cents/paper – that is universally accessible to the poorest of the poor: the mg’s of silver in the papers are a negligible contribution to the cost, while a few cm2 of paper costs pennies. Even the poorest will then be empowered to control their own water quality, bypassing expensive large-scale water infrastructure.

Our vision is to provide a range of accessible, effective, robust, and culturally adapted technologies to prevent waterborne illness. All technological advancement is contingent upon literacy and education, so Folia Water products include educational materials that allow users to gain control of their water quality, sanitation and health.

Pittsburgh Climate Change Crankie

Pittsburgh Climate Change Crankie tells the story of Pittsburgh’s environmental evolution through the history of one small house — via an archaic Appalachian entertainment device. Created by independent project manager Katy DeMent,, aka The Paper Lady, the crankie is a manually powered paper panoramic illustration that tells a story as it scrolls. The Climate Change Crankie is a bridge to conversations about Pittsburgh’s industrial history, its environmental legacy & man’s role in its brighter future. Live performances, hands-on activities & audience cooperation are on the Crankie agenda. Recipient of The Sprout Fund’s annual Seed Award program.

Latham Street Commons

Latham Street Commons (LSC) is a living laboratory that focuses on improving the health of all people living in Pittsburgh’s Garfield & Friendship neighborhoods by addressing their social, educational & economic needs. We are building a resilient & sustainable ecosystem of people working together to address all of the factors affecting access to good health — social  support, health care, education, diet, employment & connection to nature.
Centered on the idea of integrating food commerce & community with education & sustainability, we provide an innovative approach to workforce development & employment so that individuals can become self-sufficient. Our mission is to provide the necessary tools so people of all ages can design shared learning experiences that improve the overall health of their community. We aim to dissolve the idea of us vs. them, so that we’re left with just us, living well, together.

Triboro Ecodistrict

The Triboro Ecodistrict promotes coordinated sustainable community development throughout the Boroughs of Millvale, Etna and Sharpsburg. With over 10,000 residents combined, these Allegheny River Towns are building on a strong collaborative history to promote sustainable community development through the shared lenses of: Equity, Food, Water, Energy, Air Quality, and Mobility.

This partnership between New Sun Rising, Etna Economic Development Corporation, and Sharpsburg Neighborhood Organization has received guidance from Triboro ally evolveEA, which supports this initiative with planning and project management services.

Since its self-effacing beginning in 2012 with the creation of Millvale’s Ecodistrict Pivot Plan, the Triboro Ecodistrict has secured considerable funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Henry L Hillman Foundation, and The Heinz Endowments. Backing from these organizations has allowed projects like the Sharpsburg Sustainability & Civic Engagement Center, Etna Riverfront Park and the state of the art DC Microgrid at Millvale Food + Energy Hub to come to fruition. The development of ecodistricts within communities is key to address climate change and the effects that come with it. If you would like to get involved or learn more about applying the ecodistrict strategies in your area, contact brian@triboroecodistrict.org.
