The Blog of NSR

Program: Fiscally Sponsored

Pittsburgh in the Round

Founded by Mara Nadolski in 2013, Pittsburgh in the Round is “a directory of every single venue & company and a calendar of every theater, dance & opera event happening.”

But it’s not just lists & links. Latest PITR blog posts include thorough coverage of this year’s Pittsburgh Fringe Festival, play reviews (The Flick at the Pittsburgh Playhouse, Laws of Attraction by Attack Theatre), and a multi-part mini-series “on why Pittsburgh artists lose their heads over Shakespeare’s works.”

Nadolski had covered the Fringe in previous years & already knew Dan Stiker, NSR’s Director of Fiscal Sponsorship & ArtsMODE. ArtsMODE presented an opportunity to learn how to make PITR sustainable. “I definitely didn’t know how to do it myself,” she says. “I’ve learned a ton about how a business or nonprofit runs. This is by far the most beneficial thing I’ve gotten myself into!”

With its extensive directories, all-inclusive event calendar, and articles & reviews on current local theater events, Pittsburgh in the Round is already… well-rounded. Next steps include fiscal sponsorship and expanding the site to include advertising.

“In the long run I’d love to be an artistic director of a small experimental theater company,” Nadolski says. “But before [that I’ll] try and bring together the city’s theater community through Pittsburgh in the Round.”

Steel City Shakespeare Center

The mission of Steel City Shakespeare Center is to use the works of classical theater to engage and inspire the communities of the Pittsburgh region and beyond. They do this through interactive performances and other programming to introduce and re-introduce individuals from all walks of life to the transformative power of Shakespeare’s works. The effect of such an experience lasts well beyond the duration of the performance. It is their vision that individuals from diverse backgrounds will share a common creative experience and develop a greater sense of empathy in their everyday lives.

Using few props and costumes, and actors who play several roles in each show means Steel City Shakespeare Center can go practically anywhere. They don’t need a large stage, lighting, or sound systems, so they can perform in parks, backyards, community meeting rooms, and other spaces otherwise too small to host a performance.

EdTechPgh

EdTechPGH is a meetup group that connects people working at the intersection of education and technology. Our goal is to enliven the Pittsburgh ed tech community by building and sharing ideas, innovations and technology that will change the face of education in the Pittsburgh region and beyond. This group brings together Pittsburgh’s broad ed tech community to learn, discuss, brainstorm, plan, dissect, untangle and converse about education technology and related issues. We invite educators, developers, researchers, students, and anyone passionate about education to join us.

Barrels to Beethoven

Phil Solomon started making musical instruments out of tin cans as a child in British Guyana. By age seventeen he was fabricating steel pans and arranging music, eventually enjoying success in the 1970s with The Pegasus Sound Waves, Guyana’s premier steelband. He emigrated to Pittsburgh in 1984 and started Solomon Steelpan Company, the first of its kind in the U.S.

Barrels to Beethoven was founded by Solomon’s daughter Leigh Solomon Pugliano, and utilizes the steelpan as the tool for educational programming. From summer camp, in-home lessons and classroom visits to building The Pittsburgh Youth Steel Orchestra and hosting “Let’s Play Pan” events, Barrels to Beethoven is advancing this unique musical instrument by engaging and entertaining.

Imagination: Author Sydelle Pearl demystifies the author process by describing details of her process from inspiration to publication in order to empower students to write & tell their own stories.

Culture: The author demonstrates how other books thematically connect to her highlighted book in order to make relevant connections between books to foster a love of reading & to expose children to the larger world.

Kindness: At the culmination of the author visit or residency, every class and/or every student receives a gift of a personalized autographed copy of the book that sparked Sydelle Pearl’s author journey with them in order to inspire them to read.

Petticoat Rule is an audio media source in the form of a podcast that focuses on females involved in music in Pittsburgh, with dialogue & content concentrating on the dynamics of the creative process & habits for successful productivity. The guests will be female, but the bulk of the content will be intentionally gender-bias free, speaking to topics that affect any person working or seeking work in music. Guests include singer/songwriters, vocal coaches, music educators, & opera/spoken word performers. Co-created by two Pittsburgh women, host Erika June Christina Laing & sound engineer Tara Molesworth, and supported in part by a Seed Award from The Sprout Fund.

Pittsburgh Climate Change Crankie

Pittsburgh Climate Change Crankie tells the story of Pittsburgh’s environmental evolution through the history of one small house — via an archaic Appalachian entertainment device. Created by independent project manager Katy DeMent,, aka The Paper Lady, the crankie is a manually powered paper panoramic illustration that tells a story as it scrolls. The Climate Change Crankie is a bridge to conversations about Pittsburgh’s industrial history, its environmental legacy & man’s role in its brighter future. Live performances, hands-on activities & audience cooperation are on the Crankie agenda. Recipient of The Sprout Fund’s annual Seed Award program.
